To facilitate conversations about the long-term design strategy for software, I created a vision concept. The goal of this ‘vision’ was to discuss the general direction holistically.
Alignment on the strategic direction increases efficiency. It ensures that every sub-team can allocate their resources towards the same goal (and say “no” to other requests). It also ensures that right decisions are made when not every stakeholder is in the room.
This concept contained 10+ ideas that were discussed with the Product and Design team. Some of these ideas will never see the light of day, but it helps the team to formulate a shared view on the direction to go in. This project is ongoing.
Three tabs, one for each step in the workflow
Preparing a print job
It's important to select the right printer type and material before preparing a print job, otherwise it will undo previous modifications.
What's different?
Tools and other information is hidden until files are imported to focus the user's attention on the print settings.
Settings can be changed with a simple dropdown instead of leaving to a separate page so that the user doesn't lose context.
Summary panel is relocated next to the upload button because renaming a file often happens as the last step before uploading.
Monitor print progress
After uploading their print jobs, users can monitor their printers' activity in the 2nd tab. This Dashboard can also be opened in a mobile web view.
What's different?
Single-page design instead of 7 tabs
Mobile view
Grid view with camera feed
Reporting
Periodically, users may decide to report on their print results. Users can select a time range and report on the insights for that period.
What's different?
Separate tab for reporting
Data visualization for selected range
